Eco-Friendly Goals

The goal is to be as eco-friendly as possible while creating our dice, accessories, and adventures. While the adventures are easy, the rest comes with a few challenges. For us, eco-friendly means using materials that are environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and renewable when applicable and possible as well as practicing good waste management, recycling, and reducing waste for those things that don’t fall under the former categories. Here are a few things we are actively doing to help with this.

Raw Materials

The cool folks over at Mad Micas are doing a lot of things I envy. Their mica powders are ethically sourced, cruelty-free, vegan, and damn beautiful. Their powders are used in a variety of products and crafts like soaps, makeup, bath bombs, dice 😉, and more. Their ethics statement is respectable and is another reason I absolutely love their products. Every time I mix a new mica powder into resin for the first time, I get excited about what will be pulled from the mold and I have never been disappointed.

In their own words, EcoPoxy is committed to creating 100% solids epoxy systems with high bio-based carbon content materials that deliver exceptional results. In my search for doing things in the most eco-friendly ways possible, I knew I wanted to use a resin made with as much renewable resources as possible. EcoPoxy is transparent about their test methods for determining such content. I look forward to following them on their journey as they continue to improve their products with the environment in mind.

Other Additives

Other additives may include foils, cellophane, resin dyes, and other materials which are renewable or biodegradable. We try our hardest to disclose everything we can about the products we use, but not all companies make it easy to find information about how their products are made, what they are made of, how their raw materials are sourced, and how they may affect the environment. Efforts will be ongoing to ensure we are meeting our goals!

Biodegradable Mailers

We have chosen to ship our products in biodegradable/compostable shipping bags. The mailers are described as: These poly bubble mailers are certified by BPI and OK compost, and meet the standards of ASTM 6400 and EN13432. They are non-toxic , BPA-free and generate less CO2 than traditional plastic. If we find that there are issues with these mailers that conflict with our goals, we will try something else until we find something that aligns. I am also on the lookout for “cello tape” – a plant-derived and compostable packing tape. As with other materials, our efforts will be ongoing to ensure we are shipping things as eco-friendly as possible.

Natural Storage Bags

Dice are shipped in drawstring bags made from 100% cotton. Cotton is biodegradable given the correct conditions. Cotton is also a renewable resource. We’re not suggesting you chuck the bag in the trash or toss it in your garden – it probably has far more reusability than that, but we do think it is a good choice both functionally and environmentally..

Why Eco-Friendly Goals?

Unfortunately, casting a set of dice means using a thermosetting plastic (epoxy resin) which will harden and stick around forever. We are searching for a better alternative, but until then we can only do things as eco-friendly as possible. We are avid adventurers and it pains us to see trash in our favorite spots – along hiking trails, deep in the forest, and even in the rivers we frequent. Our interests lie in preserving the beauty of nature and the outdoors. If we can’t do it for ourselves, we’ll do it for those without a voice; the flora and fauna that make this world so beautiful and that we love so much.
